Love Your Feet, Care For Your Flokati Shag Rugs

Flokati rugs are one of the few things in life that give you the best of both worlds. You can bask in the throws of comfort at discount area rugs pricing. Flokati area rugs are handmade shag wool rugs. Traditionally woven entirely from wool, Flokati rugs are placed in the cool waters of the Grecian rivers to give the wool fibers their downy texture. Flokati shag rugs are naturally off-white, and are often dyed to a variety of colors. Caring for your Flokati rug is not difficult, and with the right care, you can enjoy a cozy Flokati shag rug for years and years.

The Flokati wool rug is naturally resistant to dirt, but when grime persists, here's what to do.

  • For a small area of dirt, spot cleaning will work just fine. Take a mild, nonabrasive detergent and dilute it with cold water. Using a clean sponge or dishtowel, gently agitate the sullied area until the particles of dirt are loosened.

  • For larger stains, you can wash the entire Flokati area rug. Wash your wool Flokati rug in a shallow amount of cool or cold water, just enough to cover the rug. Note: Never, ever, under any circumstances wash your Flokati area rugs with hot water because this will cause the rug to shrink.

  • Dilute a good detergent that is designed for wool in the water.

  • Gently brush the wool with your hands to saturate the material and loosen any dirt particles.

  • When your Flokati shag rug is sufficiently cleaned, let the water out and rinse off excess soap with cool water.

  • Finally, you will want to hang your Flokati area rugs out to dry. Do not leave it to dry in direct sunlight, though, because this will damage the rug. Instead, keep it in a well-ventilated area or outdoors (again, out of direct sunlight) until the area rug has dried completely.

  • Regardless of washing method, when your Flokati rug is completely dry, brush the surface to return the natural shag. Use a clean metal rake or an animal grooming brush with metal bristles.

Tips:

  • For best results, brush Flokati rugs regularly. This will maintain that Flokati fluffiness that everyone loves so dearly.

  • Do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals on your Flokati area rugs.

  • Some people will use the delicate cycle on their washing machines with confidence, but, unless you are comfortable with this setting, machine washing is not recommended for wool Flokati rugs. If you are using a washing machine, remember to program the settings to cold water for both rinse and wash cycles. Remove the Flokati rug immediately upon completion of the machine's cycle.

  • Shake out the rug occasionally to fluff up your Flokati wool rug. This should be done periodically, especially when the rug begins to flatten. After shaking, rake the rug to lift up the wool fibers.

  • Avoid using a vacuum whenever possible, as the strong suction will loosen and remove the wool fibers.

  • Don't worry if your Flokati shag rugs shed a little during the cleaning process. This is normal.

Use a Flokati shag rug in a living room or sitting area to complement a modern room décor. You can also decorate a child's room with that added bit of softness using a natural Flokati rug.
